Beach Lake Conservation Area (BLCA)
Site information
The Coastal Watershed Institute (CWI) purchased the Beach Lake Conservation Area (BLCA) land from the Phillips family with aid from federal and local grants in 2014, and spent a number of years restoring the shoreline, including the removal of almost a linear mile of shoreline armoring. The project resulted in drift cell scale coastal ecosystem restoration, including beach transformation and expansion of forage fish spawning not only along the Beach Lake Conservation Area, but over a kilometer away. The outcomes of the project are a feature article in the Journal of Coastal Restoration in 2025 (click for link) and the latest testament to the importance of the Elwha nearshore ecosystem for the Salish Sea region. CWI continues to own, manage, and restore the Beach Lake Conservation Area property, including thru the CWI led Nearshore Legacy Forest Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration Initiative.
Information on the early actions at the Beach Lake Ecosystem Conservation area can be found on the CWI blog post: Elwha Nearshore Rising: Beach Lake Shoreline Restoration.
